On July 13, 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned the medical community of serious complications associated with the use of transvaginal mesh devices in women for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). In March 2012, the FDA announced that Johnson & Johnson had sold the Gynecare Prolift product for three years without proper regulatory approval. In June 2012, Johnson & Johnson filed a request with the U.S. FDA to stop selling the Gynecare Prolift, Prolift+ M, TVT Secur, and Prosima surgical mesh products.
